Christian Old Town Sarajevo

The old town of Sarajevo also has a Christian/Western part.  The buildings are newer - nineteenth century - and full of ornamentation.  There are also markings on the ground.  See the photo of the red splashes?  That is where a mortar fell.  The number of red spots is the number of people who died because of it.

Bombed Out Police Station

This is the site the city view photos were taken from.  As you can see, it is totally rundown and in need of the mercy of the wrecking ball.  One piece of graffiti I found interesting was the bit of conflict from Moldova - "Moldova is Romania."  Very odd to see that in the Balkans!  You'd think the Balkans would have enough of their own problems.

Sarajevo From The Hills

This is the view from one of the mortar sites above Sarajevo.  As you can see, it's perfect for hitting any part of the city. The site itself is a former police station.  At one point it was bombed, and the remains are pretty pathetic.

Sarajevo Brewery

We ate lunch at the Sarajevo brewery after taking a tour of their little one room museum.  The brewery has been in existence since the mid 1800's.  Inside, it has a very Victorian vibe.

Inside The Church

The windows are all new, as are the mosaics, since the war.  Some are quite pretty.

Christmas Market Necklace Find

Found this at the Rathaus Christmas market and brought it home.  I like the drop necklaces.

Church And School

This Catholic church was used as a place of refuge for residents of Sarajevo during the siege.  It was built in the late nineteenth century and survived.  Next post of Sarajevo will be of the inside of the church.  They had to redo all the windows because of bomb blasts.

Views Outside

More of the old city, the Catholic side this time, and outdoors.  You can see the fortress on the hill.  The paint spatter on the pavement marks where a mortar hit.  There are many of these in Sarajevo; all like this resulted in deaths.  It was also an easy target, as all of Sarajevo is in a valley.
