Egypt in Greece

So... why not have a roomful of Egyptian tomb goods in the Athens Archaeological Museum?

They found this thing on a shipwreck. It seems to maybe be a calculator from the classical age, but no one's sure. Anyway, they're trying to rebuild it to find out.

Lots of little figures from tombs and temples.

The classicists liked their figures - even the ones with bull's heads.

His lightning bolt is missing, but Zeus is ready to throw anyway.

 

Decoration on Clay and Stone

Bits of grave goods plus a giant amphora. Lots of decoration on these.

 

Kore on Display

The Athens archaeology museum has whole rooms of kore on display. Some are slightly different.

 

So Much Inspiration

The final pot in this group is a truly famous one - it's even been on book covers. But this first, top pot is the one that caught my eye. Look at all the different borders for stitch inspiration! And the peeps!

 

In Death, Everyone is a Pretty Boy

The Athens Archaeology Museum has hundreds of these statues, called "kore." They are memoria for the dead. And they all have the same figure and face. Creepy.
