Shading some Leaves

I got a bit more done on this, doing stem stitch on the long leaves. They're two toned, for shading. As usual, this goes quickly when I have time to work on it. I'm hoping to have more time than usual to work on it this week and move it forward quite a bit.

I've been eyeing that piece for a few months now. One thing I am curious about is the use of a backing fabric. I was thinking of skipping that and then changing the finishing technique.

What is your opinion so far of using a backing fabric?

You really need to use the backing fabric when using evenweave and crewel. The evenweave slips a lot and the backing fabric stabilizes it. If i were using linen twill like most crewel, it'd be superfluous.
